Scary news articles of the day
c&h - can't look
[info]jesusrock7
Three selected from FARK.com. These are the actual article headlines:

1) "Will A Mask Protect Against Swine Flu?" Well, that actually depends. But don't be offended for keeping my distance from you right now...

2) "Federal convicts travel unescorted from prison to prison" -- Makes me wonder how many were on the buses I took from South Carolina to South Dakota in 1998, when the Army shipped me home. *shudder*

3) "[Seriously obese] mother admits to feeding triplets junk food... and to giving them their first McDonald's at just SIX MONTHS" -- Remember to use eye bleach *before* clicking to read this one. Yuck!!!

Writer's Block: Beautiful Vistas

What is the most beautiful view you've ever seen? Have you been there, or do you plan to visit? If you have one, share a picture.

I have personally seen a number of incredible views, in terms of scenery and landscapes. I can't recall details off the top of my head, but one of the most recent has to be the Lompoul desert we camped at in Senegal, W. Africa. A miniature Sahara maybe 2-3 miles in diameter with dunes of the softest, fine orange-ish sand imaginable. (Leave a comment and I will send you a link to my pic.)

Other memorable views include my first Chinese New Year fireworks over Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong; the quiet Orkney Islands, off the north coast of Scotland; and Jungfraujoch, the snow-and-ice mountaintop in southern Switzerland (near Interlaken).

What is the strangest advice you've ever received from a fortune cookie?

I get the random and vague variety no matter what. The only exception thus far was last June on a "just friends" date. It was so accurate that I kept it. Well, technically it was in HIS cookie, but I asked to keep it.

An old friend will introduce you to new people and experiences.

We'd first met eachother as part of a group last May that got together to watch Prince Caspian on opening night. The reason for this apropos cookie experience is that a mutual friend of ours suggested getting to know eachother better one-on-one; he's known her since she was in jr high. Is that odd, or is that GOD?! Heheh.

Writer's Block: Year of the Ox

Happy Chinese New Year! The Year of the Ox starts today. What is your Chinese zodiac animal? Do you think you fit the description of the sign?

View 500 Answers

I learned back in 4th grade that I was born in the Year of the Snake. So was my mom, for that matter. Dad = horse, bro 1 & wife = monkey, bro 2 & wife = dog, sis = rat. I suppose I could figure out my nieces too ... first one is a rooster, the other's a goat. Since this is the year of the ox, it will be my nephew's when he's born this spring.

I don't know if it's actually part of Chinese zodiac legend, but according to the Japanese anime & manga Fruits Basket about the Chinese zodiac, the cat is excluded because he wasn't told about the race...or something like that.

Playing House in the White House
By JENNA and BARBARA BUSH

Sasha and Malia, we were seven when our beloved grandfather was sworn in as the 41st President of the United States. We stood proudly on the platform, our tiny hands icicles, as we lived history. We listened intently to the words spoken on Inauguration Day service, duty, honor. But being seven, we didn't quite understand the gravity of the position our Grandfather was committing to. We watched as the bands marched by -- the red, white, and blue streamers welcoming us to a new role: the family members of a President.

They really think I will believe this is legit? FAIL in *so*many ways:
- Why send it to students and staff at a university in South Africa?
- It was sent by someone at said university (look at the last 2 lines)
- Nokia is a Swedish company. Why give a reward in UK money?
- For that matter, the South African currency is called "rand," not "Great Britain Pounds."
- And wouldn't it be better to at least give a (fake) Nokia-company email address instead of Hotmail?

There are some games in which cheering for the other side feels better than winning.
by Rick Reilly ~ "Life of Reilly" - ESPN.com

They played the oddest game in high school football history last month down in Grapevine, Texas.

It was Grapevine Faith vs. Gainesville State School and everything about it was upside down. For instance, when Gainesville came out to take the field, the Faith fans made a 40-yard spirit line for them to run through.

Did you hear that? The other team's fans?
